Moving to a new house with pets, in particular cats and dogs, can be daunting. Being naturally territorial, a cat or dog could find a house move disruptive and disorienting. Follow our simple tips on moving house with pets and they’ll settle into your new home as quickly as you do!
On the day of your house move, ask a friend or relative to look after your pet so they are out the way. If you are unable to find a pet sitter, pop your pet in a quiet room to help them keep calm and away from any loud noises/stressful situations. Leave them with a familiar toy, their dog/cat bed and plenty of food and water.
Give your pet plenty of attention and reassurance, both during and straight after the move.
To help your pet feel at ease, avoid washing their bedding straightaway, leave it a couple of weeks so there is something familiar-smelling in your new house.
Before you let your pet run outside to explore the garden make sure it is secure, check for any gaps in the fencing and walls. It’s also a good idea to accompany your pet outside until they become more confident in their new surroundings.
Pets are creatures of comfort and sometimes they can take a little while to settle; allow them time to relax and become familiar with their new surroundings. Try not to leave your pet on their own for too long until they are fully settled as this can cause anxiety.
Sticking to your pet’s daily routine (walking and feeding routine) before moving and then continuing it once you have moved will make the transition a lot more manageable and will make your pets feel more at ease.
In the instance your pet decides to take a walk around your new neighbourhood, it is important that they can be identified, should they get lost. Make sure your pet’s ID tag or microchip details are up to date and include details of your new home address.
