Hygge: Ways to survive winter lockdown

This year has been long and hard, and with another lockdown underway during winter, we’d all be forgiven for feeling miserable. But as hard as the next few months ahead may seem, there is a way to survive winter lockdown; by embracing a little bit of hygge into our lives.

What is hygge?

There are many ways to describe hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) but to put it simply it’s the Danish ritual of enjoying life’s simple pleasures. Hygge is acknowledging a feeling or moment (with friends and family or by yourself) as cosy, charming or special.

It is about finding deeper meaning within ordinary life and embracing little luxuries every day to foster a sense of familiarity, comfort and kinship.

So with this in mind, we have compiled a list of simple ways to introduce Hygge into your home during winter lockdown.

5 ways to introduce hygge into your home

1. A thick blanket

Hygge is all about feeling cosy. Wrapping yourself in a thick fuzzy blanket will give you a gorgeous feeling of cosiness.

2. Candles

Lighting a candle or two is a great way to bring a little hygge into your home. Candles create a brooding sense of atmosphere to any room, so dim the lights and enjoy inhaling your favourite scent. We would recommend Yankee Candle’s Spiced Orange for the perfect winter scent.

3. Bubble bath

Is there anything more relaxing than a warm soak in a bubble bath after a long day? To make your bath even more hygge, why not give yourself a pamper using luxury spa products.

4. Pyjamas

We’re talking full length, soft, classic cotton pj’s, preferably worn whilst watching a great film with a nice glass of red wine.

5. A good book

With all our digital distractions, it can be difficult to settle in and find the time to read a good book. But nothing beats snuggling up on your favourite armchair and getting stuck into a good novel on a cold winter’s day.
