We can blame the countless programmes on TV giving home-staging advice during the last decade for taking the personality and style out of our homes.
Whilst sticking to neutral colours is a good idea when trying to sell your house, we think it’s time to ditch the bland and style your home to give it more pizzazz. So, here is our guide of the 12 do’s and don’ts of home staging.
Don’t just paint walls in magnolia
Choose a sophisticated colour palette with different but complementary shades for every room.
Do go grey
We love grey as a base colour for walls, floors or fabrics because it’s still a neutral shade but adds a bit of style and class to a room.
Carpet is a no no for most buyers now.
Karndean flooring is excellent for areas with lots of footfall, especially in hallways and kitchens, it also looks great! Tiles in bathrooms are a given, not only are tiles hard-wearing but also easy to keep clean. If the decor in the bathroom is plain, try a fun and interesting design for the flooring.

This is one area where ‘bland’ is best!
Do add some finishing touches
Shop for modern accessories like rugs, lamps, vases and ornaments. The White Company or John Lewis are great places to go for style and quality. Online retailers such as Wayfair and Made are also great for up-to-date accessories that are stylish yet affordable.
Don’t forget to pack away your belongings
A collection of teapots, fluffy toys or scarily realistic dolls are best packed away. Remember although you may love them, they won’t be to everyone’s taste and can be quite off-putting. On the plus side, once they are packed away, it’s one thing ticked off the to-do list for your forthcoming move.
Do feel free to splash a bit of colour
Whilst sticking to an overall colour palette for the whole house, using different shade and accents in each room is a great way to create a wow factor.
Don’t however be tempted to go for strong colours and prints
Too much colour or pattern can be overwhelming, so it’s best to keep colours to small items like cushions, rugs or throws. Or some really fun and interesting artwork.
Do dress to impress
Setting the dining and kitchen tables using dining sets, good glasses and flowers will set the scene and help buyers visualise themselves living in your house.
Don’t forget the bathroom
Fill your bathroom with special toiletries (try Molton Brown) and hide away the bottles of Pantene, tubes of Colgate and half-used bars of soap!
