On Monday 31 August, John German was proud to support the Curborough Charity Day, a fantastic annual event bringing together classic cars, motorcycles and motoring enthusiasts in aid of Staffordshire Clubs for Young People.
Held at Curborough Sprint Course near Lichfield, the event featured more than 100 classic cars and motorcycles taking part in demonstration runs around the famous figure-of-eight course.
There was also a special guest in attendance, with Richard Attwood joining the event. Richard famously won the 1970 Le Mans 24 Hours for Porsche alongside Hans Herrmann, securing Porsche’s first outright victory at Le Mans. Also among the highlights was a Courage C36 Porsche, a spectacular Le Mans prototype from the 1990s.
Among those enjoying the day were Fiona and her family, Paul and his family, and former John German director James Morgan, who all headed to Curborough to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the fantastic collection of cars and bikes.
While at the event, James also made a fantastic John German connection when he met Will Anderson, whose father Robert was a partner at John German until the 1990s. Will showed James a wonderful old photograph of the Ashby office, dated 1934! We’re hoping to have the photograph on display soon, giving everyone the opportunity to see a fascinating piece of John German history for themselves.
There was even the opportunity to get out on the circuit, with Fiona’s husband generously contributing his driving fee to the charity before managing to sign on and take his MGB GT around the course for a few runs, having an absolute blast. A rather good way to spend a Bank Holiday Monday!
The weather certainly provided some added excitement. Torrential rain regularly swept across the circuit, leaving the track wet and slippery and making conditions challenging for those taking part. Thankfully, the downpours were interspersed with some lovely spells of sunshine, giving everyone a chance to dry out before the next shower arrived!

Away from the track, there was plenty to enjoy, with a small bar, ice creams, and food available from The Sprinters Rest Café beside the circuit.
Most importantly, Curborough Charity Day was all about raising money for Staffordshire Clubs for Young People, supporting the fantastic work they do with young people across Staffordshire. The previous year’s event raised more than £16,500 for charity, and the organisers were hoping to build on that success again this year.
It was a brilliant day of classic motoring, family fun, community spirit and a little piece of John German history, and we’re delighted to have played our part in supporting such a worthwhile local event.
