With winter approaching, now’s a great time to embrace the cosy side of life. Though there are many ways to describe hygge, (pronounced hoo-ga) to put it simply it’s the Danish ritual of enjoying life's simple pleasures. Friends. Family. Graciousness.
It's about finding deeper meaning within ordinary life and establishing a meaningful, mindful connection with the world. Hygge is about embracing little luxuries every day to foster a sense of familiarity, comfort and kinship.
Anything which involves delicious food, hot chocolate, cosy blankets and entertaining friends and family sounds good to us!
1. A thick blanket
Hygge is all about felling cosy and what could be cosier than a warm, fuzzy blanket.
To add a brooding sense of atmosphere to any room, dim the lights and enjoy inhaling your favourite scent (ours is Yankee Candle’s Spiced Orange, perfect Christmassy scent).
3. Good company
To create feelings of friendliness and wellbeing within everyday life, it’s important to gather your nearest and dearests for a hearty, healthy dinner and some stimulating conversation.
4. Danish Pastries
To create a feeling of contentment, it’s important that we treat ourselves. No Kitchen is worth of hygge status unless it has a table adorned with Danish pastries.
Danes love bacon and they eat a lot of it. The smell of bacon wafting through the house on a Sunday morning is one of the most comforting we can think of, especially when looking to cure a hangover from last night’s dinner party!
6. Bubble bath bliss
Is there anything more relaxing than a warm soak after a long day? We can’ think of much. To make your bath even more hygge, dim the lights light candles and make sure you’ve got a good book.
We’re talking full length, cosy, classic pjs – preferably paired with a great film and a cup of tea.
8. Board games
After a family dinner, let the wonderful atmosphere continue with a good old-fashioned game of Chess, Monopoly, Connect Four or Cluedo.
9. A bicycle
Believe it or not, there is more to Hygge than staying cooped up indoors. To live a happy, healthy, balanced life it’s important to get outside and experience nature. And what better way to see the sights than a bike?
10. A good book
With all our digital distractions, it can be difficult to settle in and find the time to read a good book, but snuggling up on the sofa and getting stuck into a good novel on a cold day is one of life’s greatest pleasures.
11. Salmon…or simple food
Scandi-style calls for big, simple suppers that can be easily cooked and shared with family and friends with minimum fuss. A side of salmon is the perfect thing – healthy, wholesome and delicious.
12. Hot chocolate (our fave)
An essential during the winter months no matter where you are, treat yourself some more and make your hot chocolate with whole milk, cream and good quality chocolate.
