2 Million home owners aged 55+ thinking about moving
The children have long flown the nest and they are now having children of their own. Although it has been a pleasure to see them grow up, you may now have free time on your hands to do more things you love; you might even be thinking about moving.
If you are one of the 2 million home owners aged over 55 who has considered moving in the last two years, what has stopped you from making the move?
Main reason for older homeowners deciding to stay put
According to the results from the annual Homeowner survey conducted by YouGov for Home Owners Alliance and BLP Insurance almost 500,000 (23%) of homeowners aged 55 or over who considered moving say lack of suitable housing was the main reason they did not do so.
Top priorities when thinking about moving
When thinking about a future move, top priorities are similar regardless of age. Good build quality (71%), spaciousness of rooms (72%) and parking (69%) top the list.
However, the survey did find some factors were more important to older home buyers compared to younger ones.
Top criteria for the over 55’s when considering a new home:
Availability of parking (77% vs 69%)
Low running costs (70% vs 59%)
Proximity to shops (66% vs 55%)
Good transport links (56% vs 47%)
Living on one level (36% vs 24%)
